The ultimate development of the 1947 Rex McCandless Featherbed Frame Design. This model features the Slimline variation of the design.

The 650SS was a Norton motorcycle made by between 1962 and 1967 at Norton’s Plumstead works in England. Developed from the Norton Dominator, the Featherbed frame was altered so that the top rails were closer together to create what became known as the 'slimline featherbed'. A 650cc twin carburetor engine was installed which was capable of 110–115 mph (180–185 km/h).

The 'SS' stood for Sports Special and the 600cc models were discontinued to concentrate on production of the 650SS, which quickly earned a reputation as the best of the Dominators.

Fitted as standard with twin Amal Monobloc carburetors with the intakes angled downwards. Issued with Twin exhausts with a modernised speedometer and tachometer, the 650SS was finished in a black frame with silver fuel tank and optional chrome fenders.

In February 1962 Motor Cycling magazine achieved a best one-way speed of 119.5mph at MIRA with a 650SS, more than 10mph faster than the rival Triumph Bonneville tested the previous summer.

This bike has been renovated over the past year and has had the following work and parts replaced. Old records including the Norton Factory Record, engineers vehicle report, UK V5’s.

It has been re-imported into UK after being exported and registered in Spain by the current owner and has all relevant supporting documents including engineers report and Spanish ITV certificate until 26/11/2014. Currently has UK MOT Certificate until June 2015 and has it’s original UK registration assigned.

The bike has excellent original paintwork, the tank has been re-sprayed and the chain case, battery box and oil tank have been re-chromed. All other chrome is of excellent quality. The bike is fitted with Stainless Steel spokes and wheel rims - they are perfect.

Mechanically all parts have been checked and replaced where necessary. A new clutch, springs and shock rubbers have been replaced as well as all the kickstart and gear change springs. The cylinder head has had new valves, springs, piston rings and the barrel fitted with helicoils. The carburetors have been serviced with replacement jets, floats and needles. All electrics are working and it has been fitted with an upgraded rectifier and reconditioned magneto. Tyres are good (new rear) and upgraded Dunstall twin leading front brake with new brake shoes have been fitted all-round.

It has not covered many miles as you would expect in Menorca before being returned to UK and has been checked out by a leading Norton specialist who has re-torqued the head and re-checked all the settings.

The reason for selling - I am just looking for another project but would consider a part exchange ideally for another 30’s / 40’s Norton or what have you ......
